LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's basketball (1-0) season is officially underway after the hometown Saints took care of business against visiting Capilano University to the tune of a 63-39 victory. Anjel Galbraith led the way, scoring 17 points, grabbing six boards, and four steals.
It was a sprinting start for the Saints as the first bucket of the game was scored by
Chenoa Louie, followed quickly by a
Rian Clear bucket. Galbraith was responsible for the next five points, hitting a three on one side off a nice pass from Louie, before swiping a steal and finishing at the other end. Just like that, it was 10-0 less than three minutes into the contest. The double-digit would be held by SMU for most of the remainder of the game.
The second quarter was a defensive clinic from Saint Martino's as they limited the Blues to just one field goal in the entire ten minutes. Along with one free throw, that meant Capilano was held to just three points in the quarter. Unfortunately, the defense from CU was nearly just as good as the Blues held the Saints to just nine points.
Emily Nelson's bucket in the final minute meant SMU would trot into the locker room up 17.
The Blues came out of the locker room up the task in the third quarter, earning a 16-16 split for the frame before a fourth quarter surge from Saint Martin's would cement the blowout. Every SMU player available got the chance to step on the floor in the victory, while Keeli Jade Smith, Avery Oaster, Mya Hattchett-Groce, Kiana Rios, and Lilly Koki all notched their first career points as a Saint. Louie added seven rebounds to her 12-point outings, while
Lauryn Morris led the Saints with eight rebounds. Oaster was dropping dimes all night and finished with six assists.
Iternite Reed chipped in two blocks.
The Saints are back at it again tomorrow with a quick turnaround game against Cal Poly Humboldt (0-1). The Saints and the Lumberjacks battle at 2 PM at Marcus Pavilion.
