LACEY, Wash. – Leading by as many as 22, Saint Martin's looked up at a tied game, 75-75, with just seconds left.
Alex Schumacher drove to the top of the 3-point line, handed off to
Kyle Greeley, who pulled up in-between two defenders, and drilled the game-winning 3-pointer with just 0.9 seconds left on the clock.
Saint Martin's (16-7, 9-5 GNAC) looked to be in full control of the game early in the second half. A 22-8 run by Northwest Nazarene (8-8, 6-5) in the final five minutes nearly sent the game into overtime.
Alex Schumacher led all scorers with 22 points with five rebounds, and six assists. Greeley ended with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and 4-for-5 beyond the arc.
Christian Haffner connected for 16 points, followed by
Brett Reed's eight points, 13 rebounds, and
Marky Adams' seven points off the bench.
The Saints' offense looked ready from the tip, scoring the first eight points of the game. Schumacher, Adams, and Reed all scored within the paint to quickly set the tone. The lead swelled to double-digits just five minutes into the game.
Northwest Nazarene managed to trim the lead down to just three over the next four minutes. With eight minutes left in the half, the Saints used a 10-0 run, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Haffner, and Greeley, to stretch the lead back out to 13.
Saint Martin's continued to connect from deep, hitting six 3-pointers in the final 6:38 of the half, capped off by a nearly half court pull up from
Goy Wang as the buzzer expired.
The second half began nearly like the first, with the Saints on fire. Greeley, and Haffner connected on a 3-pointer each, and Schumacher drilled a step back jumper to put SMU on top 53-31 just two and half minutes in.
Northwest Nazarene chipped away at the lead, using a 12-2 run midway through the half to cut the score to 60-46. Entering the final five minutes, the Saints' lead held at 13.
But the 13-point lead did not hold. Northwest Nazarene, over the final 5:37 of the game, outscored the Saints 22-8 and managed to tie the game on a 3-pointer with just 26 seconds left.
With one final possession, game tied at 75-75, Schumacher handled out on the TwinStar logo. With seven seconds left, Schumacher broke to the top of the 3-point line, using a screen, and handed back to Greeley. Greeley, working from the opposite side of Schumacher, rolled off the hand off, and pulled up for a deep 3-pointer. The shot banked off the back iron, and rattled home for the game-winner with just 0.9 left on the clock.
Saint Martin's returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 5:15 PM against Central Washington as part of senior day. The Saints final home will honor the seniors before tip-off, and live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
