Smoke's Heroics Leads Saints To 10th Straight Victory

LACEY, Wash. – For the first time since 2012, the Saints have reached double-digits in their win streak after sweeping Simon Fraser 7-6 and 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.

In their first GNAC action of the season, the Saints quickly jumped to the top of the standings with a four-win weekend. However, there was drama in the first game of the afternoon, with the Saints trailing by one in the ninth inning. With Malia Pinder on base, Vanessa Smoke ended the game with one swing, a two-run blast to left to send the Saints to a 7-6 victory. Then in the second game, Chloe Leverington shut down the offense of the Simon Fraser, and rolled to a 6-2 victory.

In the opener, Simon Fraser led 2-0 before Destiny Conerly continued her tear at the plate, hitting a solo shot. Olivia Schmidt continued the offense with a double down the line, scoring Devyn Connolly.

The score remained tied 2-2 until the seventh inning when Simon Fraser put three on the board. Needing three to tie, the Saints put runners on for Smoke, who came through with a two RBI double to cut the lead down to 5-4. Then Conerly followed with an RBI double to right center to send the game into extra innings.

Once again, when the Saints' order turned over to the top, Smoke's second home run of the season put the Saints on a verge of series sweep with a 7-6 win.

Abby Runyon went all nine innings, allowing only four runs with four strikeouts.

Simon Fraser struck first in the second game, scoring one in the first. However, the lead did not hold long as Connolly put the Saints on top with her two RBI double in the bottom of the first.

Saint Martin's broke open the game with a three run second inning, made up of RBI hits from Natalie Zender, Pinder, and Connolly. Connolly topped off her four RBI game with a single insurance run in the fourth, leading to the Saints' 6-2 sweep.

Leverington once again proved to be masterful inside the circle, going all seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits with two punchouts.

The Saints take their 10-game win streak on the road to Western Oregon for a four-game series starting on Saturday, March 26.
