MONMOUTH, Ore. – Saint Martin's extended their win streak to 11 straight before evidently falling to Western Oregon to split the pair in the series opening doubleheader.
Western Oregon took the first lead of the day, scoring their lone run in the second inning of the opener. But the Saints responded right back in the top of the third.
Using three walks, an error, a hit by pitch, and a sac fly, the Saints managed to score four runs in the third without any hits to take the lead. They added an insurance run in the fifth with
Devyn Connolly's RBI single to center.
The combined effort from
Abby Runyon, and
Chloe Leverington was enough to limit Western Oregon to only one run on three hits, while punching out 13 batters. Leverington picked up the win after throwing the final four innings, where she struck out eight batters, and walked no one, bringing her season total to 48 strikeouts, and just five walks.
However, the win streak, the longest since 2012, came to an end in the second game, as Western Oregon knocked off the Saints 8-2. The Wolves scored the opening four runs, and the final four runs of the game. RBI singles from
Malia Pinder and
Vanessa Smoke accounted for the two runs of support.
The Saints square off against Western Oregon for another two games on Sunday, starting at noon.
