Clutch Hitting Rallies Saints To Series Split With Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – A clutch two-out seventh inning rally lifted the Saints to a doubleheader and series split against Western Oregon on Sunday,

After falling in the opener 4-0 to Western Oregon, Saint Martin's bounced back with a 3-1 victory in game two. Returning to the field, and lineup for the Saints was Kylie Vanderbout, who quickly made an impact.

The infielder drove in the first run of the game in the second inning, an RBI single up the middle, scoring Destiny Conerly. She later struck again in the seventh, capping off the day with another RBI single, this time through the right side, to put SMU on top 3-1.

Western Oregon managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, and the game remained locked until the final inning. To begin the rally for the Saints in the seventh, Conerly reached on a walk, and later advanced to third on a groundout, and sac bunt. With two outs, and the go-ahead run on third, Kekai Schultz came up with the clutch hit, an RBI single to right to give the Saints the lead. She proceeded to steal second, then scored on Vanderbout's single.

Abbey Runyon earned the win after going six innings, allowing the lone run, and punched out three. Chloe Leverington, who pitched the first game all six innings, came in to earn the save in the second game.

Saint Martin's improved to 16-10 on the season, and 6-2 in GNAC action. They travel to California for the Tournament of Champions next weekend, a five-game, three-day schedule in Turlock.
