Game One (ARTU 11 – SMU 9) - In a game where the Saints put up nine runs on 10 hits, Saint Martin's fell short to Academy of Art in the opening game of the Tournament of Champions on Friday.
Saint Martin's jumped on Academy of Art with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run blast by
Britney Patrick to deep left centerfield.
Natalie Zender and
Malia Pinder each drove in a run during the inning with RBIs to the outfield.
Academy of Art regained the lead with a six-run fifth inning to open up an 8-4 lead but once again, the Saints threw a four spot on the board. In the bottom of the fifth, a wild pitch allowed Patrick to come home to kick off the inning. Then
Natalie Zender singled up the middle, scoring two runs, and on the play, an error brought home
Shay Lopes to tie the ballgame at 8-8.
The score remained gridlocked at 8-8 until extra innings when Academy of Art scored three runs in the top of the eighth. The Saints managed to drive in one in the bottom of the frame, but ultimately fell short 11-9.
Game Two (SMU 6 – SSU 1) – Early offense along with a lights out performance from
Tia Ridings powered the Saints to a 6-1 victory over Sonoma State on Friday night.
Malia Pinder got the game started with a two RBI double to right center in the first inning, scoring
Natalie Zender and
Britney Patrick. In the second, the Saints added to their lead beginning with
Shay Lopes' RBI double down the right field line.
Vanessa Smoke capped off the inning with a two-run blast to left center, making it a 5-0 ballgame. Smoke later drove in the final run of the game in the sixth on a single through the right side.
The early run support is all Ridings needed as she shut down the bats of Sonoma State with a complete game, four hit, one run, five strikeout performance. Ridings retired the side in four of the seven innings, and finished with two strikeouts in the seventh to secure the win.
Game Three (SMU 4 – SSU 2) – The pitching for the Saints continued to hold strong on the efforts from
Tia Ridings and
Chloe Leverington in SMU's 4-2 victory over Tournament of Champions host Stanislaus State.
Saint Martin's had an opportunity to break open the game in the first, loading the bases with just one out. Stanislaus State managed to limit the damage but the Saints took the lead on a bases-loaded walk.
Stanislaus State tied the game in the bottom of the first, and the score remained 1-1 until the fourth. A two RBI double from
Shay Lopes broke the tie, putting SMU on top 3-1. The Saints added an insurance run in the sixth on a sac fly by
Vanessa Smoke, and coasted to the 4-2 victory over the Warriors.
Ridings got the start for the Saints, going 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Leverington came in to record the final out of the fifth, leaving two runners, and closed out the final two innings with two strikeouts.
Game Four (CSUDH 8 – SMU 0) – Cal State Dominguez Hills, behind a strong pitching performance, knocked off the Saints by a score of 8-0 in the fourth game of the Tournament of Champions for SMU.
Dominguez Hills jumped on the Saints early two runs in the first, before adding two more in the third. CSUDH opened up the lead in the seventh with another four runs to clinch the 8-0 result.
Saint Martin's had opportunities to break the shutout, getting a runner in scoring position in both the fourth and the seventh. However, the Saints were unable to string together multiple hits and fell.
Game Five (CSUMB 5 – SMU 1) – In the finale of the Tournament of Champions, the Saints dropped the result to Cal State Monterey Bay 5-1.
Saint Martin's pounced early with an RBI single from
Vanessa Smoke, who scored
Shay Lopes on her lead-off single, and stolen base. Unfortunately for the Saints, the offense was unable to find more run support in the next six frames.
Monterey Bay tied up the game in the second on an RBI single up the middle, and later took the lead in the third with a double, scoring two. The Otters went on to score another run in the third, and an insurance run in the fourth to clinch the 5-1 result.
