Saints Come Up Short In Doubleheader Loss To Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Traveling to Bellingham for some non-conference matchups, the Saints fell to the Vikings in two closely contested games, 5-3 and 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Western Washington (9-11) scored the first runs of the day in the first inning on a two-run home run to left. Three shutout innings later, the Vikings added another two runs in the fifth, and a final run in the sixth.

Saint Martin's (4-8) started a rally in their final inning, after an opening fly out, Destiny Conerly singled down the line to set up Kaleena Yra. The freshman, who hit a game-winning double the day before, stepped up again with a two-run shot to put the Saints on the board.

With two outs, the rally continued with a Shay Lopes' double and an RBI single from Devyn Connolly made it a two-run game. Saint Martin's managed to load the bases before Western Washington escaped the jam with a ground out.

Tia Ridings got the start, going 4.1 innings with two runs allowed, and six strikeouts. Chloe Leverington went two-thirds of an inning before Kylie Parsons closed out the final inning.

The second game shaped into a pitcher's duel with Western Washington not scoring the first run until the fifth inning on a solo shot. Saint Martin's struck right back in the sixth on an RBI double to center off the bat off Malia Pinder.

Saint Martin's got within one strike of sending the game into extra innings before a double to the gap sealed the 2-1 victory for the Vikings.

Abby Runyon pitched the full game, going 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Saint Martin's heads to Bellevue for a Wednesday night doubleheader against Northwest with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 PM.
