BILLINGS, Mont. – For the second consecutive season head coach
Dan Behnke and the Saint Martin's volleyball team leave Billings with a 4-0 record to start the season after defeating MSU Moorhead and University of Mary on the second day of the tournament.
Tia Allen followed up her 2021 tournament MVP with an All-Tournament selection and joined teammate
Maddy Gooding on the All-Tournament Team.
The Saints (4-0) began the second day of the tournament with their toughest match of the tournament against MSU Moorhead (2-2). The Dragons won the first set 25-19, before the Saints won the next two sets 26-24 and 25-15. MSU Moorhead won set four 25-22 and SMU won the final set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Allen led the way for the Saints with 21 kills and 19 digs.
Jennifer Soha had a team-high five blocks and
Karla Soto led the team in assists with 49. Saint Martin's had six aces in the match from Soto (3),
Giselle Benetti (2) and Gooding (1).
In the second and final match of the tournament, the Saints were matched up against the Marauders (0-4). SMU won in straight sets, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-17.
Allen once again led in kills with 15 and
Mackenzie Gilchrist led the defensive efforts with 14 digs.
Jennifer Soha had three blocks and
Karla Soto had a team-high 25 assists. The Saints six aces came from Allen (2),
Gracie Brenner (3) and
Abigail Halstead with one.
Allen ended the day with 36 kills and 29 digs to bring her to 61 kills and 42 digs over the tournament.
Gooding ended the day with 12 points and ended the tournament with 30 points total.
Saint Martin's returns home to host a game against Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday, August 30 before hosting a tournament next weekend. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com
