LACEY, WA. – The Saint Martin's volleyball team (11-4, 1-4 GNAC) have officially eclipsed a program record with their win Saturday night over the Western Oregon Wolves (5-8, 1-4 GNAC). After crushing WOU 3-0 (28-26, 25-10, 25-19) to earn their 11
th win of the season, the Saints officially passed their most ever wins in the course of a single season, surpassing their record of 10 that they set next year.
Tia Allen would set the tone right off the bat with a match opening kill. Later in the set, Saint Martin's would go on a nice four-point run with
Karla Soto serving to build a 13-9 lead. WOU responded with a four-point rally of their own, then flipped the tables on the Saints, putting themselves up 20-15. This Saint squad refused to quit though. Four of the next five points were scored by SMU capped off with an
Abigail Halstead ace to make it 21-19. The Wolves got to the precipice of the set win, going up 24-22, but again, the Saints refused to die.
Jennifer Soha found paydirt, followed by a Western Oregon mistake. Allen would snag another kill and all of a sudden, SMU was up 25-24. WOU made it interesting, but yet again, Allen would come up clutch, scoring the two final points to win it for the Saints 28-26.
Set number two was much more clear-cut domination from the hosts. With the score at 7-6 Saints, Soto grabbed a kill to flip it to her serve. Nine points later, it was still her serve and Saint Martin's had a 17-6 lead. SMU would finish the set on a rally as well. With Allen serving the Saints tallied the final four points and Soto teamed up with
Loredana Fouonji for the set-winning block.
Once the Saints got a 3-2 lead off a Fouonji kill in the third set, they would never surrender the lead. Allen continued on her phenomenal night and finished with 14 kills, while Soto continued to spread the rock enroute to 37 assists. Halstead led the back row with 11 digs. After eventually getting to match point, the entirety of Marcus Pavilion rose to their feet to bring the ladies across for the 11
th victory of the fall. Fittingly, Allen ended it with another powerful kill. Last season, it took 21 games for the volleyball team to get to a program record 10 wins, this year they have surpassed that mark in just 15 contests.
The Saints head to Billings, Montana on Thursday, September 6th to take on the Yellowjackets of MSU-B (6-7, 0-6 GNAC). The game will start at 7 PM in Alterowitz Gymnasium.
