Billings, MT. – The Saint Martin's volleyball team (12-4, 2-4 GNAC) rolled to another conference win Thursday night, hammering MSU-Billings (7-8, 0-7 GNAC) by a score of a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 26-24).
Tia Allen and
Emmy Hansen led the way, each grabbing double-digit kills.
Allen got the game started with just that, a kill, to put SMU up to begin the contest. The big run of the first set came with
Karla Soto serving as the Saints powered across six-straight points. Hansen had two straight kills in the run, while Soto also added an ace. After Billing drew it close once again, it was again Soto serving to launch Saint Martin's into the driver's seat. Eight straight points, including three aces, made it 24-16. A few serves later, Hansen finished off the set with a kill to make it 25-18.
The second set was again a set in which the Saints sat in the driver's seat with the visiting squad tallying a 24-16 lead to put themselves on the brink of a 2-0 lead. Billings responded with some gutsy play to draw rip off five straight points before
Maddy Gooding stepped up to hammer the nail in the coffin for a 25-21 win in set two.
The Saints and Yellowjackets had a classic tug-of-war third set with neither side gaining a clear advantage until late, when an Allen kill made it 24-22 SMU. MSU-B countered with two straight kills to save them from their fate, but Saint Martin's was just too much. After a bad serve put the contest at match point, Hansen fired off the game-winner with a kill to clinch the final set 26-24.
Allen led all players with 15 kills, while Hansen totaled 11. Soto cracked four aces to go along with her 35 assists.
Jennifer Soha and Gooding were stellar at the net with three blocks each, while Halstead manned the backline well with 12 digs.
The Saints stay on the road on Saturday, October 1
st, where they take on Seattle Pacific (5-9, 3-3 GNAC) at 2 PM in the Emerald City.
