Seattle, WA. – The Saint Martin's volleyball team (12-5, 2-5 GNAC) stumbled on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to Seattle Pacific (7-9, 5-3 GNAC) by a score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-19).
The first set was a tight affair, with the Saints going up 2-0 after a
Tia Allen kill and a
Kayla May ace. Midway through the set, SMU was still holding a small lead, with
Karla Soto notching a kill to make it 16-14 Saints. Then the Falcons went on a run, surging in front and getting themselves to set point at 24-20. Saint Martin's staved off defeat for three points, including kills from Allen and
Loredana Fouonji, but SPU was just too much and took the first 25-23.
Seattle Pacific was nuclear to start the second, gaining a seven-point edge in the early going. A run with Soto serving flipped it back close, though, as SMU railed off five-straight points that included two kills from
Emmy Hansen. Shortly after, the home squad tallied their own seven-point run and would end up taking the set 25-18. In the third, it was again a story of too many Pacific runs that resulted in a deficit that the Saint Martin's team just could not overcome. SPU took the third set by six to win the match 3-0.
Fouonji led the Saints in kills with eight, while Soto had 23 assists.
Maddy Gooding was a monster at the net, totaling four blocks.
The Saints are back at home next Thursday, October 6
th, when they host the Vikings of Western Washington (11-4, 6-1 GNAC). The game will start at 7 PM in Marcus Pavilion.
