ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Saints lose their 2nd straight on the road 3-0 in a NCAA non-conference match versus Sonoma State.
In hosting the visitors from Lacey, the Sonoma State University Seawolves out shot Saint Martin's 9-4 in the 1st half and 10-0 in the 2nd. The key to these statistics though lie once again in when the goals were given up. While all three goals were well earned, the second and third goals were given up with under four minutes to go in the half. Just as the first five minutes of a game is critical in terms of not surrendering a goal, it is equally as crucial for the five minutes prior to the end of a half.
In the second half, Saint Martin's played with grit, effort and spirit. Sonoma state was effective in playing a pressing wide-open attack, but the Saints put their defense in full force and dealt with the Seawolves' pressure. Due to personnel issues that came up in the game, the Saints shifted Senior Christian Gordon from his customary left back to center back position and Freshman Daniel Shooshan moved from midfield to left back. Saints head coach Rob Walker, commented, "we've discussed moving CG and Daniel to play in the back as they're both left footed and their balance helped us play out of pressure and deal with Sonoma's attacks in a very tangible and effective way. "
Walker went on to add, "the midfield duo of Jay Mendoza and Diego Andrade also did a tremendous amount of dirty work in their positions in the second half as did Angel Alvarez, Ethan Jud and Arjun Gill. These boys all played 90 minutes today and we had a couple very good chances that don't end up in the statistics because they didn't end in a shooting situation but, proved to be dangerous nonetheless. When you were a little outmanned and need grit to get the job done, a 0–0 second half is a good result for us."
The Saints return to Lacey for a week of training and then travel to Monmouth, Oregon to play their final nonconference games of the year against California State University-Dominguez Hills and Stanislaus State next Friday and Sunday respectively.
