Three Strong Quarters Erased in Heartbreaking Loss

LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's basketball team (4-9, 0-5 GNAC) outplayed Seattle Pacific University (10-4, 5-1 GNAC) for three quarters on Saturday evening, but after the Falcons came out roaring in the fourth, SMU fell by a score of 52-50.

After a defensive first, the Saint plastered SPU in the second. Sarah Lamet started the quarter with a bucket and Anjel Galbraith followed that up with the first SMU three-pointer of the contest. Another Galbraith bucket and a layup by Mya Hatchett-Groce tied up the game. With the score knotted at 22-22, SMU finished the quarter with the final four points thanks to another Hatchett-Groce bucket, followed by two Galbraith free throws.

The third quarter continued to come up Saints as SMU continued the run they started before half and carried their run all the way to 13-0 before SPU was finally able to manage a point. It was a Sarah Lamet buzzer beater that finished the quarter as the freshman center flushed a deep two-pointer as the clock expired. The Falcons suffocated SMU on defense in the fourth as the Saints only totaled one bucket from the field. Despite the struggles, Galbraith knocked down two clutch free throws with 10 seconds to go to tie the game at 50. Needing a stop, SMU got called for a controversial foul with just second to spare, and SPU hit the two ensuing free throws to win it.

Lauryn Morris finished with her second double-double in three games, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 boards. Galbraith had 16 points with six assists, and Lamet scored 10 points.

The Saints head to Bellingham on Thursday to take on No. 6 Western Washington (11-1, 5-0 GNAC) in another conference affair. Tipoff is set for 7 PM at Carver Gymnasium.
