Gill’s Brace Churns Saints to Gritty Draw with NNU

LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's men's soccer team (3-5-2, 1-3-1 GNAC) grinded their way to a comeback win over the defending conference champions Northwest Nazarene (3-4-4, 1-1-3 GNAC). The backbone behind the Saints offense on the day was Arjun Gill who had two goals, while David Settle assisted him on both scoring plays.

The Saints were down 2-0 quickly with multiple goals from NNU in the first 22 minutes. The comeback started in the 28th minute when Settle cracked a hard shot off the underside of the crossbar that just stayed out. In the ensuing fracas, Gill game screaming through the box to stab the shot in the back of the net and cut the deficit in half. In the second half, Gill needed just six minutes to equalize the game as a nice dish from Settle saw him through on go where he ripped a shot that was cleared off the line by a Nighthawk defender. Unfortunately for NNU the ball popped right back to Gill who buried the rebound to make it 2-2.

Nick Mueller kept it level with numerous clutch saves down the stretch while the Saints kept the pressure on with numerous chances late. Anjel Alvardo earned a fair penalty shout in the 88th minute, but the ref opted to continue play without a call. There was also a huge chance for the Saints when Nathan McClellan's cross was headed towards goal by Settle but a full extension save from the NNU keeper kept it out. Xander Koenig had two shots on goal while Diego Andrade and Daniel Shooshan had one.

The Saints are back at home next Thursday at 3:30 PM when they host Simon Fraser University.
