Saints Show Character in Dramatic Comeback Win Over SPU

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Saint Martin's men's soccer team (4-6-2, 2-4-1 GNAC) had everybody fooled down 2-0 in the early going against Seattle Pacific (4-6-2, 2-3-1 GNAC) on Saturday night, but it was a fervent comeback from the Saints who rallied for three straight goals to pull off a miraculous comeback victory at Interbay Stadium.

After a PK in the 28th minute, the Falcons had the advantage by two which made it a large margin for the Saints to overcome. Before the stroke of halftime, the Saints created an olive branch for themselves with a well worked goal where Elijah Gutierrez and Cameron Kreider combined to find David Settle in front of goal who slotted a perfectly placed shot with his left foot into the lower right corner. Still, the Saints went into the locker room down by one and needed more magic in the second half.

Play was even through the first 25 minutes of the second half before Diego Andrade found that magic touch to even the game. After a long dribble past multiple defenders, space cleared for Andrade who ripped a 25-yard rocket with his left foot that sniped the upper left corner for a tie game. It was just 12 minutes later that team captain Seth Kobota went on a hard run down the right side before crossing a ball into a waiting Anjel Alvarado who blasted it home for the lead. Nick Mueller refused to allow any goals in for the final 10 minutes as the Saints clinched victory.

"All credit to [assistant coaches] Sebastian and Gio for the gameplan, and the boys for the execution," said Head Coach Rob Walker after the dramatic victory. "Character is something that we talk about a lot, and in the span of the last 48 hours, we showed a lot of it."

The Saints head to Billings on Thursday to take on MSUB at 4 PM.
