LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's volleyball (9-6, 3-3 GNAC) made some history Thursday night with a convincing 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 29-27, 25-11) over Alaska Anchorage (10-11, 2-4 GNAC). This win was a milestone in the
Dan Behnke era as it was the first win over UAA since November 1
st, 2007 and it snapped a 23-game losing streak versus the Seawolves.
Anchorage held the lead for the majority of the first set, but numerous timely kills from
Jennifer Soha kept the Saints in it. Late in the set, SMU was down 20-18 before a
Sirena Peredo kill put the serve in her hands. That set off a run of seven straight points to end the set finished off by an
Emily Garten kill who won the set 25-20.
After UAA took the second set, SMU refused to let the third get away from them. When the Seawolves had set point at 24-21, Soha slammed the ball home to fight off death followed by a Peredo kill. After the two sides battled into extra points, a block from
Emmy Hansen and
Maddy Gooding eventually won it.
In the fourth set, the Saints put the foot on the gas with a convincing 25-11 victory. Peredo finished the match with 17 kills and 18 digs for another double-double while Garten had 15 kills.
Karla Soto had 46 assists to go along with four aces.
Maddy Gooding had four blocks while Abbey Halstead had 20 digs.
The Saints are back at home Saturday at 1 PM against Alaska Fairbanks.
