ELLENSBURG, Wash. – It may have been a brisk afternoon, but the ball was flying for
Damon Ingram of the Saint Martin's baseball (2-8) team. In a non-conference doubleheader with Central Washington (3-11), Ingram and the Saints exploded offensively in game one, winning 13-10, before a 6-4 loss in game two.
It was right away that SMU got to work in the first contest, as
Michael Yamaguchi opened the account in the top of the first, scoring
Brady Bean.
Reid Little then stepped up and notched his first RBI of the game with a base knock to get home Yamaguchi. Finally, Ingram cleaned up and got
Alohi Arecchi and Little home to make it 4-0 after one.
Mark Steward got two more Saints home in the next inning to preclude a sac fly from Arecchi and another RBI knock from Little. The Saints had their lead doubled at 8-0. The Wildcats would chip back, however, and other than a Little two-run double, SMU was silent offensively. It was 10-4 in the sixth when Ingram put the final nail in the coffin smacking a monster home run to right field to make it 13.
Justice Yamashita got the start and allowed just one earned run.
Colin Driscoll got the win, while
Cole Hatton tallied the save.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 13, Central Washington 10
In the seven inning game two, the Saints nearly clawed their way back into it after falling behind in the third, but just didn't have enough in the tank. After going down 2-0 in the second,
Griffin Williams laced a double to right field that brough home
Austin Schaler and
Braeden McNally to tie the game. In the bottom of the inning, however, three runs came across for CWU.
An RBI fielder's choice and a Schaler double steal of home helped give SMU a chance, but in the end, there was too much ground to overcome in the seven innings allotted.
Carson Jones pitched 3.1 innings out of the pen, allowing just one earned run.
FINAL: Central Washington 6, Saint Martin's 4
Saint Martin's will continue a run of play against Central Washington, as they are set to host the Wildcats this Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 PM at Saints Field.
