Yamaguchi Stays Hot as SMU Leaves Monmouth with a Win

MONMOUTH, Oreg. – The Saint Martin's baseball team (10-19, 7-9 GNAC) played a four-game series on Thursday and Friday, grabbing one win against the Western Oregon Wolves (15-9, 9-5 GNAC). They lost three narrow contests by scores of 6-5, 3-0, and 5-3, before taking the finale 6-4.

In the game one loss, the Saints scored four in the top of the ninth but fell just one run short of the comeback. Brady Bean and Michael Yamaguchi each had two RBIs, while Dylan McLaughlin scored twice.
FINAL: Western Oregon 6, Saint Martin's 5

Game two on Thursday had SMU suffocated offensively, despite Yamaguchi continuing his hot streak with two hits. Justice Yamashita was tabbed with the complete game loss, throw six innings and allowing three earned runs. The Saint Martin's pitcher finished with nine strikeouts.
FINAL: Western Oregon 3, Saint Martin's 0

It was another late surge by the Saints on Friday, with three runs scored in the top of the eighth. It started with a Yamaguchi two-RBI single, followed by Mark Steward pushing home Yamaguchi. Carson Jones was the star of the day on the mound, firing 5.1 innings of work with no earned runs against him. In the end, the Saints came up just two runs short.
FINAL: Western Oregon 5, Saint Martin's 3

SMU was able to put it all together in the fourth and final game of the series. First, Bean scored on a passed ball, before Yamaguchi drove home another run to make it 2-0. In the sixth, it was an incredibly clutch play from Austin Schaler who doubled the lead with a two-run two-bagger that he shot to left center field. Steward brought home Bean later in the frame, and the Saints tacked on one more in the seventh with a bases loaded walk from Schaler. Nikki Scott picked up the win on the mound, firing six innings scoreless to start the contest. When things started to get a little dicey against Scott in the bottom of the seventh, Mattingly Milledge came on to get the final out and lock down the save, his second of the year.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 6, Western Oregon 4

The Saints are back on the road next Friday and Saturday as they take on the Wildcats of Central Washington (10-20, 6-8 GNAC). First pitch in Ellensburg on Friday is set for 12 PM.
