LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's baseball team (15-29, 11-19 GNAC) took the second half of their penultimate doubleheader of the 2023 season with an exciting 3-2 win over Western Oregon (27-13, 20-9 GNAC). The win was thanks to another quality start by
Justice Yamashita, while
Alohi Arecchi was the offensive hero with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth.
The Saints dropped the first game of the doubleheader 13-2, with the runs coming on an RBI groundout by
Mark Steward and a run scoring single by
Dylan McLaughlin.
Brady Bean was the lone Saints to have a multi-hit day going 3-4 with a run scored.
In the first inning of game two it was Arecchi that played decoy for Bean as the SMU outfielder got caught stealing second while Bean ran home and scored the opening run. That pushed Bean's 2023 mark to 38 runs scored, and if he crosses the plate once tomorrow, the freshman will climb into the top-10 for single season runs scored in SMU history.
In the second, the Wolves got to Yamashita for their only time in the game, putting two across to take the lead. The fifth inning, however, was the offensive concoction the Saints needed for the win. It started with a
Braeden McNally single, which was followed by
Austin Schaler ripping a base knock up the middle. After a Bean flyout advanced the runners to second and third, Arecchi powered a double beyond the right fielder to score the two runs needed for the win.
In the top of the seventh, Yamashita sent Western Oregon packing in order to break their 11-game winning streak.
The Saints will play their final games of the season on Friday, May 5
th at 12 PM and 3 PM against Western Oregon. Senior day festivities will start at around 11:45 AM.
