LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's soccer team (2-1-1) dropped a contest Saturday afternoon 3-0 at home against Regis University (4-2).
It seemed like Saint Martin's was in control of the game for the first 30 minutes or so as
Alia Khoyi and
Rose Ivanis each launched a decent chance within the first five minutes.
Jamine Biava added a shot as well, before
Sam Bailey had her attempt saved by the Ranger keeper. Regis found the breakthrough in the 32
nd minute on a sketchy ball into the box that bounced around the box and eventually went in off a SMU player. Ranger striker Madeline Gardner scored two goals over the remainder of the contest to finish it at a score of 3-0.
"Regis was the best opponent we have seen to this point," said Head Coach Derek Faulkner, "Quality throughout the roster and really well coached. I'm really proud of the way our group fought for 90 minutes. We were difficult to play against and caused some problems for them. Just unfortunate not to get one in the back of the net, but that's the sport. We took some great steps forward through this non-conference schedule and put down a good foundation. Looking forward to the challenges ahead."
SMU actually outshot Regis 14-12, with fouls, corners, and saves all being equal between the two sides. Keeper
Flavia Burrell had four saves.
Taylor Copeland led the Saints in shots with three, while
Sierra Nees and Ivanis had two each.
The Saints are now on to their conference schedule where they host undefeated Western Oregon this Thursday at Saints Field. Kickoff in that game is set for 3 PM in Lacey.
