SMU Delivers SPU First Home Loss as Marlowe Grabs First GNAC Win

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Saint Martin's women's basketball team (3-9, 1-4 GNAC) nabbed a hard-fought win at Brougham Pavilion on Saturday evening, defeating Seattle Pacific (6-10, 3-3 GNAC) by a score of 55-52. Not only was the Natalie Marlowe's first conference win as Head Coach of the Saints, but it was also the first home loss for SPU this year.

Trailing by three after the first quarter, the second frame was where the contest was won as SMU outscored SPU 16-9 in that time. The spark was fueled first by Anjel Galbraith who hit a bucket, then a Kiana Rios three pointer. Three straight Shalyse Smith baskets eventually gave the Saints the lead, before Lauryn Morris got in on the action too. Smith finished the impressive outburst with another score with 42 seconds to go and the Saints pranced into the locker room up by four.

Down the stretch, it was more clutch shots made by the Saints when they needed them, including a total of 21 dropped by Smith, and two late threes from Galbraith that fueled her to 13. Smith nearly had a double-double with nine boards, while Sarah Lamet had four assists to lead the way.

The Saints are finally back at home on Thursday after over a month off from playing in Marcus Pavilion. They'll do battle with Western Washington at 5:15 PM on Thursday in the front end of Pack the Pav presented by TwinStar Credit Union.
