Volleyball Comes Up Just Short of Reverse Sweep in Loss to Nanooks

SMU Volleyball was defeated by Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, October 24th, 3-2.

LACEY, WA — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team (5-13, 3-7 GNAC) hosted the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks on Thursday in a GNAC contest.

The Nanooks would come out hot against the Saints, with their offense making quick work of the first two sets. Even with the Saints on their heels, Tiffany Lam and Aundrea Oxentine did everything they could to set the Saints up for success, with Lam notching 30 assists during the match and Oxentine contributing nine of her own. The Saints would drop the first set 25-12, but would respond back with an offensive spark of their own to make the second set close. They would drop set two 25-21 but would be prepared for the third set, where the offense found their stride.

Kingsley Mason and Jennifer Soha would make their presences known in the later sets of the match, providing the Saints with the momentum they needed to take the game to five sets. Mason would set a season-high mark of 19 kills, with Soha recording nine of her own, along with five huge blocks at the net that would swing the match back in SMU's favor. The Saints would claim set three by a score of 25-20. Emmy Hansen, Emily Garten, and Zoey Crimin would join the party by combining for 26 kills. These points would prove to be crucial in the fourth set, with the Saints needing extra points to win by a score of 27-25. Saint Martin's would be up to the challenge in the fifth set, as Lam and Abigail Halstead would stand out with clutch digs all over the floor. Lam would finish the day with 20 digs, Halstead would have 15, and Hansen would end with 10. Despite their best efforts, the Saints would lose set five by a score of 19-17, resulting in a match win for the Nanooks.

The Saints will take on Alaska Anchorage at South Puget Sound Community College on Saturday, October 26th at 1:00 PM.
