Last-Minute Goal by Yamada Secures Win for Women's Soccer Over Seattle Pacific

SMU Women's Soccer defeated Seattle Pacific on Saturday, October 26th, 2-1.

SEATTLE, WA — The Saint Martin's Women's Soccer team (2-11-2, 2-6-2 GNAC) took on the undefeated Seattle Pacific Falcons this past Saturday at the Interbay Soccer Field.

The Falcons would begin the game with multiple early shot attempts and aggressive offense but would be shut out by Flavia Burrell through the first half. Burrell kept her incredible season of goalkeeping going by tallying nine total saves throughout the match. Rose Ivanis and Keilee Silva would help with the Saints' defensive efforts, flying around the pitch and contesting multiple Falcons' attacks throughout all 90 minutes of game time. Despite a late offensive push from the Saints, including shots by Ravyn Mummey and Hinata Kojima, the game would remain tied at 0-0 at the half.

The Saints would remain stout on the defensive side of the ball in the second half, but the offense would steal the show as Eve Charles would connect with the back of the net off an Ivanis pass in the 55th minute following an SPU yellow card, putting the Saints up 1-0. The Saints would continue with offensive pressure after the goal, but the Falcons would finally work their way back to the other side of the field and put together a few scoring attempts that would almost connect. Burrell and the defense would hold strong, but an SMU yellow card would set the Falcons up for a goal in the 87th minute, tying the game at 1-1. Even with the late-game score, the Saints still had a chance for a final offensive push that would be aided by back-to-back fouls on the Falcons.

The final scoring attempt of the evening would come from senior midfielder Brianna Yamada from just outside the penalty box, who, with just 22 seconds left in the game, would strike the right side of the net to put the Saints ahead 2-1 to claim the victory. This win would mark the first time in program history that Saint Martin's Women's Soccer defeated Seattle Pacific and would end the Falcons' 26-game GNAC unbeaten streak dating back to 2022. Yamada's crucial goal would also mark her first of the season. Mummey would record two shots on goal and Annika Akiona would record one of her own during the game.

The Saints return home this week as they take on Simon Fraser on Thursday, October 31st at 2:00 PM, and host Western Washington for Senior Day on Saturday, November 2nd. Get tickets here.
