Women's Soccer Loses Tightly-Contested Match to Vikings

SMU Women's Soccer was defeated by Western Washington on the road on Thursday, October 3, 1-0.

BELLINGHAM, WA — The Saints (1-7-0, 1-2-0 GNAC) traveled up to Bellingham on Thursday to take on the Western Washington Vikings in what would prove to be another defensive battle.

The game would begin at a slower pace with both sides countering the opposing offensive efforts. Western Washington would find a few opportunities throughout the first half but would be stopped multiple times by senior goalkeeper Flavia Burrell, who would have six saves during the match. Eve Charles and Inara Lopes De Andrade would find creases in the Vikings' defense early but would not score goals on either shot they attempted.

WWU would push the tempo to start the second half, attempting a shot in the 49th minute that would be saved by Burrell in the bottom right corner of the goal. Despite the Saints' best efforts, a series of corner kicks would put the Vikings in position to strike. Jane Hmura would score the only goal of the day in the 60th minute for Western Washington. Burrell would stop three more shots from going in, but SMU could not find their rhythm on offense and would ultimately fall to WWU, 1-0. Hinata Kojima would attempt a shot in the second half.

Saints Women's Soccer head to Canada for a conference match against Simon Fraser on Saturday, October 5, at 4:00 PM.
