Men's Basketball Outlasts UHH to Finish Opening Weekend 3-0

SMU Men's Basketball defeated Hawai'i-Hilo on Sunday, November 3rd, 75-71.

LANGLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA — The Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team (3-0) rounded out their weekend at the CCA Canadian Tip-Off against Hawai'i-Hilo.

SMU and UHH would begin the game by trading points, with multiple Saints making their presences known early. Gavin Gilstrap would find an early steal and a couple of boards, while Jaden Nielsen-Skinner and Jayshawn Moore would begin their scoring efforts from the jump. Both teams would continue to trade blows, with Dae'Kwon Watson and Myles Samuels coming to life as the half progressed. Samuels would lead the team with 22 points during the game, with Watson contributing 14 of his own in a balanced offensive showing from the Saints. Nielsen-Skinner, Diego Trejo-Delgado, and Marcel Stevens would each contribute eight points to the effort as the Saints would head to halftime with a 34-31 lead.

The Saints would take the momentum early in the second half, but the Vulcans would continue to keep pace with SMU's offense. Trejo-Delgado would help the Saints expand their lead by grabbing a team-high nine boards with Moore and Immanuel Oludele grabbing five of their own. Samuels would continue his scoring dominance to keep the offense humming, and while Hilo would keep it close at the end of the game with good clock management, the Saints would keep them at an arms-length, ultimately winning the game 75-71.

SMU would end the CCA Canadian Tip-Off as the only team to go undefeated, marking the third straight year that the Saints have opened the season 3-0. The Saints are averaging 86 points per game with six players averaging over nine points per game. Samuels would be named First-Team All-Tournament and Nielsen-Skinner and Moore would be named to the Second Team.

Head Coach Aaron Landon was not able to make it to Canada, but could not be more proud of his team's efforts over the weekend:

"We grew so much this weekend, and our guys did that despite plenty of adversity and challenges surrounding our program. We played against three great teams, each of which has their own unique style and identity. I thought our guys were brilliant at adapting to each opponent. I am incredibly proud and grateful of how Tyler Velasquez handled the weekend. He stepped in as a head coach and our program didn't miss a beat, this weekend is another testament to who he is as a basketball coach and leader."

The Saints will compete in the GNAC-PacWest Challenge this upcoming weekend in Billings, Montana. Learn more here.
