Women's Soccer Drops Senior Day Contest to Vikings

SMU Women's Soccer was defeated by Western Washington on Saturday, November 2nd, 2-0.

LACEY, WA — Saint Martin's Womens Soccer (2-12-3, 2-7-3 GNAC) came ready to face the top-seeded Western Washington Vikings this past Saturday, energized after a historic victory over Seattle Pacific, well-earned draw against Simon Fraser, and packed house at Saints Field for Senior Day.

From the first whistle, both teams would battle for ball control with each offense on the attack. Western Washington would find a gap in the Saints' defense ten minutes in, slotting a goal to go up 1-0. The Saints' defense would adjust after the first goal, and while they would not respond with a goal of their own, they would find themselves still just one score down at the half.

Midfielder Payton Aselton made her presence known in the second half, denying any WWU players that came near her. Keilee Silva backed her up with relentless defensive plays, keeping the Vikings from increasing their lead. Their teamwork anchored the Saints' back line and would keep the game within reach. As the Saints fought to equalize, they created several promising chances on goal. Then, in a swift counterattack, Western Washington struck again, widening the lead to 2-0.

With time ticking down, senior Alyssa Carapia took charge, pressing the Vikings every chance she got. Alia Khoyi also shined, showing impressive footwork and control, weaving past defenders and leaving a few on the ground. Ultimately, however, they would not be able to capitalize and would lose the contest by a score of 2-0.

The Saints would honor nine seniors before the game: Payton Aselton, Inara Lopes De Andrade, Alia Khoyi, Brianna Yamada, Ravyn Mummey, Taylor Copeland, Alyssa Carapia, Rachel Kimura, and Flavia Burrell. We thank them for their dedication and service to SMU Athletics, the University, and the wider Lacey community during their time as Saints. The Women's Soccer team will finish their season later this week as they face NNU on Thursday and host CWU on Saturday. Get tickets here.
