FAIRBANKS, AK — Saint Martin's Women's Basketball (7-2, 1-1 GNAC) rounded out their road trip by taking on the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks last Saturday.
The Nanooks would score the first basket of the game 11 seconds into the contest, but after a three-pointer from
Jada Travis, the Saints would claim the lead and never look back. The offense would get rolling early thanks to the efforts of Travis, who would put up 26 points and contribute nine assists, seven steals, and seven boards in one of her best performances of the season. She would also go 8-12 (66.7%) from the field and 3-4 (75%) from the three-point line.
Kiana Rios would also be an efficient scorer for the Saints with 20 points and eight rebounds, bringing the junior's season average to 12.6 points per game.
Laiken Hill and
Sabrina Lopez would also score in the double digits, putting up 16 and 11 points, respectively. The multi-faceted Saints' offense would take a 17-point lead going into halftime, 55-38.
The Saints would carry their momentum into the second half and expand the SMU lead even further.
Iternite Reed and
Madelyn Brown would be important contributors throughout the game, with both grabbing rebounds, efficiently scoring in the paint, and playing lockdown defense. Reed would end the game with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal, while Brown would record six points, five assists, and two rebounds.
Sarah Lamet and
Keeli Jade Smith would also see major minutes for Saint Martin's. The team effort would help the Saints keep their foot on the gas and win by a final score of 105-71. The team's 105 points is a program record for the GNAC/NCAA Division II era of SMU Women's Basketball, dating back to 2001.
Head Coach
Natalie Marlowe was excited to see the team respond after their loss to Alaska Anchorage just a couple days before the contest:
"We talked about how life is 10% what happens to you ad 90% about how you respond. After Thursday, we responded the way we needed to. Everyone contributed today whether on the court or bringing the energy from the bench. When we play with purpose and confidence, we're a pretty good basketball team."
SMU Women's Basketball will compete in an exhibition contest against Washington State University on Sunday, December 15th, in Pullman. You can get tickets and more information
