HILO, Haw. – Colin Driscoll paced the way for the Saints in a huge highlight on their once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii, when on Saturday he had 12 strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work to tie a Saint Martin's record and lead SMU to a 5-4 victory. The Saints finished the
Big Island Bash with a 1-4 record, the losses coming to Hawaii-Hilo and Hawaii Pacific.
The Saints bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the opener with
Dylan McLaughlin coming up with a clutch two-run single to score
Jonathan Shimabukuro and
Kyle Schabot, before
Damon Ingram scored
Austin Schaler with a double down the right field line. Shimabukuro was the only Saint with multiple hits on offense, while
Cole Hatton got the start, striking out four over 3.2 innings.
FINAL: Hawaii-Hilo 8, Saint Martin's 3
A four-run fifth for the Vulcans doomed the Saints in game two on Thursday, but the Saints leapt out to a lead to start once again. The opening run came when
Hunter Sasaki crossed the plate thanks to an error from Hilo.
Blaze Wong fired four scoreless before the plague of runs arrived in the fifth. Wong had four strikeouts, while relief pitcher
Nikki Scott II had two Ks.
FINAL: Hawaii-Hilo 4, Saint Martin's 1
The Saints outhit Hawaii Pacific on Friday and once again took an early lead, however, the Sharks just nabbed the right runs when needed and came back for the win.
Justice Yamashita locked the Pacific bats down for six innings, but it was in the seventh when a fielder's choice and an error finally scored two runs for the home state team. Yamashita finished with six strikeouts, while
Raige Velez did come in and throw a scoreless inning. The one run for the Saints came in the fourth when Colin Bell singled home
Mark Steward.
FINAL: Hawaii Pacific 2, Saint Martin's 1
For the fourth straight Hawaii game, SMU led to start but this time, they would not be denied a win. Driscoll was marvelous on the bump, with the only run in the first eight innings being scored due to an error and a balk. He also was fanning Silverswords left and right with a total of 12 K's, which tied an SMU record. The lead was thanks to a Saint outburst in the fourth. First, Schabot singled home
Peter Hollabaugh, then
Kelton Tom earned an RBI getting plunked with the bases loaded. Two different RBI groundouts got two more runs home, then finally Tom capped off the scoring, sprinting home on a passed ball.
After a single and a walk, Driscoll was removed in the ninth with one out.
Bryson Nakamoto was able to tally the save in the dramatic situation limiting the runs across in the ninth to just three. It was Tom that made the final out, throwing to first base from the catcher's position on a groundout after the potential tying run had made it to third base.
FINAL: Saint Martin's 5, Chaminade 4
Once again, Saint Martin's built a lead but just wasn't able to hold on. McLaughlin ripped a long ball to start, then
Rylen Miyasaki and Sasaki each tallied a run-scoring knock in the fifth. Shimabukuro then put the Saints up 4-1 in the eighth when his bunt worked out as a single then an error on the throw got home McLaughlin.
Isaiah Mayfield-Prieto was marvelous in the start, going 6.1 and allowing just one run. Eventually, the Vulcans would walk it off in extras on a fielder's choice sac bunt.
FINAL: Hawaii-Hilo 5, Saint Martin's 4
The Saint Martin;s baseball team still has two more games in Hawaii, starting with a battle against Chaminade on Tuesday, February 13
th at 6 PM. Both of the games will take place in Oahu, Hawaii.
