LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's baseball team won two and lost two this weekend in a battle with MSU-Billings, thanks to high quality pitching including a complete-game with no earned runs performance from
Justice Yamashita, a no-hitter into extra innings from
Colin Driscoll, and a combined one-run out from
Isaiah Mayfield-Prieto and
Blaze Wong.
The Saints started slow in game one on Thursday, as it took until the eighth inning to get runs on the board. Those runs came via a wild pitch and an error in the eighth, then an RBI single from
Charlie Johns in the ninth.
Bryson Nakamoto mostly locked down the Yellowjackets coming out of the 'pen as he threw five innings with four hits allowed, two strikeouts, and four hits allowed.
Raige Velez through the final inning scoreless.
FINAL: MSUB 7, SMU 3
On Friday, it was two straight 2-1 wins for SMU starting off with a combined gem from Wong and Mayfield-Prieto. In the start, Mayfield-Prieto pitched four innings, allowing only two hits and no runs. Wong finished with the final five, only allowing one run. An RBI single from
Jonathan Shimabukuro and an RBI double from
Peter Hollabaugh both scored
Mark Steward and gave SMU the needed runs to win. Wong would pick up his second win of the season.
FINAL: SMU 2, MSUB 1
Steward was the one picking up the RBI in the first inning of the next game, scoring
Austin Schaler on a fielder's choice.
Reid Little then forced Billings into an error that pushed
Damon Ingram across and the Saints found themselves with a lead they would not surrender. Yamashita allowed no earned runs with only five hits allowed and no walks, he also added five strikeouts for his first win of the season.
FINAL: SMU 2, MSUB 1
Driscoll took a perfect game into the fifth, when an error dislodged the lack of baserunners for MSUB. However, the next at-bat saw Steward catching a runner stealing to make it once again that Driscoll had faced the minimum. Once again, Driscoll cruised. Through seven innings, which was the scheduled length of the game, Driscoll had sent 21 up, and 21 down. With the score still knotted at zero, the game was launched to extras where neither team could find a breakthrough in the eighth. Driscoll continued his no-hitter through the eighth and into the ninth, where, with one out, MSUB finally got their first hit with a triple. The next play saw an RBI single and the game-winning run come across for the Yellowjackets. Driscoll finished with 10 strikeouts and one of the toughest losing decisions you'll see in the sport.
FINAL: MSUB 1, SMU 0
The Saints are back at home next weekend with a series against Western Oregon University on both Saturday and Sunday at Saints Field.
