Women's Soccer Drops Defensive Battle to Wolves

SMU Women's Soccer was defeated by Western Oregon on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

MONMOUTH, OR — The Saints Women's Soccer team (0-6-0, 0-1-0 GNAC) lost their opening conference contest to Western Oregon University on the road, 1-0.

SMU Women's Soccer traveled down to Monmouth, Oregon to take on the WOU Wolves to open their conference slate. Western Oregon started the game hot and controlled the pace of play for a majority of the contest, as the Wolves would attempt 20 shots with seven in total being on target. Saint Martin's, on the other hand, struggled to stay consistent on the offensive side of the ball due to a stout WOU defense. Hinata Kojima would attempt the team's only shot 77 minutes in. Payton Aselton and Keilee Silva each put in a full 90 minutes of game time.

The Saints defense was anchored by goalie Flavia Burrell, who accounted for six saves while only allowing one goal on the day. While the Saints defense held serve for most of the game, an early goal by WOU's Olivia Fothergill (3') would be enough to secure the victory for the Wolves in a 1-0 battle.

The Saints will look to bounce back Saturday, September 28 against Central Washington in Ellensburg. See more upcoming contests for SMU Athletics here.
