LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball program came away with a resounding victory at home against No. 19 Western Washington, winning in three straight sets at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, October 4.
The Saints limited the Vikings to 17 or less points in each set, and combined to hit .356% as a team in an emphatic GNAC victory against a top-25 opponent. The win improved SMU's record to 9-4 on the season and 2-3 in GNAC play.
How It Happened
- The Saints started off the match in a strong rhythm, a trend that ultimately lasted for the entire three sets. SMU scored the first three points, and then saw 6-0 and 5-0 runs to build a commanding 15-3 lead. The Saints led by as much as 13 points, and held on to win 25-15 behind a .371% team hitting percentage.
- The second set mirrored the start of the first, as a quick 5-0 run out of the gates saw Saint Martin's build an early advantage. The Saints extended the lead to 12-2, and led by as much as 11 points during the frame. SMU hit .324% and limited Western Washington to .029%, pulling away to win 25-14.
- The third set was the closest of the match, but even so, a narrow 2-1 Western Washington lead early on was the only time the Saints trailed in the match. After a close start, a 7-3 run midway through helped Saint Martin's pull ahead 17-11. Both teams exchanged small runs later in the set, but SMU closed the match on a 5-1 run that saw Emmy Hansen's kill secure a 25-17 third set victory, clinching the top-25 victory at home.
