Saints defeat Sharks to cap off 2-0 trip to GNAC-PacWest Conference Challenge

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team was victorious against Hawaii Pacific, 58-44, in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday, November 15.

The Saints saw three players score in double figures, including a double-double by sophomore Jada Travis. The win capped off a 2-0 trip to the GNAC-PawWest Conference Challenge and improved SMU's record to 3-2 on the season..

How It Happened

  • The Saints shot 25% in the first quarter compared to 55.6% for the Sharks, but built a 14-12 lead behind 5-7 shooting from the free-throw strike. SMU built an early 8-2 lead out of the gates, but the Sharks closed the gap to 14-12 at the end of the first frame.
  • Saint Martin's and Hawaii Pacific both scored 11 points in the second quarter, with the Saints holding an 11-8 advantage in rebounding. The Sharks hit an early three to take a 15-14 advantage over the Saints, before Saint Martin's bounced back to pull ahead by five midway through the quarter. A late three-pointer by Hawaii Pacific trimmed the Saint Martin's lead to 25-23 heading into halftime.
  • The Saints out scored the Sharks 16-10 in the third quarter, going 5-6 at the free-throw line. A 7-0 run out of the gates by the Saints put SMU up 32-23 with 5:35 remaining in the quarter. Hawaii Pacific later hit back-to-back three-pointers to trim the SMU lead to 34-31 with 3:51 left in the frame. SMU closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run, heading into the final quarter leading 41-33.
  • The Sharks opened the fourth quarter with a 4-0 run, but Jada Travis responded for the Saints with an and-one, followed by a layup by Avery Oaster to give the Saints a 46-37 lead with 4:49 left in regulation. The Saints pulled ahead by double digits with just over four minutes and never looked back, running off with a 14-point victory.

Top Performers

  • Kiana Rios led the Saints with 16 points, 10 of which came from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds and four steals.
  • Jada Travis totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Avery Oaster was just shy of a double-double, tallying 11 points and eight boards.

  • The Saints held a 36-30 advantage in team rebounding and converted on 21 free-throw attempts.
