Saints defeated by Colorado Mesa on final day of DII Canadian Tip-Off Classic

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team lost to Colorado Mesa 65-40 on the final day of the DII Canadian Tip-Off Classic in Langley, B.C. on Sunday, November 2.

The Saints and Mavericks played out close-knit second and third quarters, but big advantages in the first and fourth quarters put Colorado Mesa ahead. The loss dropped SMU's record to 1-2 on the season.

How It Happened

  • After the game started off 2-2 the Mavericks embarked on a critical 15-0 run that put the Saints behind from the get-go. SMU ended the quarter with two free-throws and a jumper by Jaylah Brown, but a free-throw from Colorado Mesa put SMU down 18-6 after the first quarter.
  • The Saints opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run that saw a three-pointer by Laiken Hill, a jumper by Jada Travis, and three free-throws by Kiana Rios to cut the deficit to 18-15 at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter. The remainder of the quarter saw just three free-throws for the Saints, as the Mavericks bounced back with a 13-3 run that saw SMU go into half down 31-18.
  • SMU had its best shooting quarter of the game in the third, going 6-17 from the field. Both teams exchanged buckets back and forth, with the Mavericks extending their biggest lead to 17 midway through, and the Saints cutting it to 48-34 heading into the final frame.
  • A 53.3% shooting clip in the fourth quarter by Colorado Mesa put the game away, as the Saints were out scored 17-6 and went on to lose by a final score of 65-40.

Top Performers

  • Jada Travis led the Saints with seven points, and added three rebounds and two steals.
  • Sabrina Lopez totaled eight points, seven rebounds and one steal.
  • Avery Oaster tallied five points, three rebounds, and two steals.

Up Next

Next up, the Saints will travel to Hawaii to compete against the University of Hawaii in an exhibition on Nov. 13. SMU will then face Chaminade on Nov. 14 and Hawaii Pacific on Nov. 15, as part of the GNAC-PacWest Conference Challenge.
