Men’s Basketball falls on the road at Cal State Easy Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team lost its non-conference matchup at Cal State Easy Bay on Tuesday, November 25 in Hayward California, falling by a final score of 73-58.

The loss dropped SMU's record on the season to 3-2 overall.

How It Happened

First Half

  • The Saints started off slow offensively, as a Kaden Hansen three-pointer and free-throw were the only points for the Saints through the first five minutes. Cal State East Bay built an early 11-5 lead at this point, but Saint Martin's picked up the offensive production and went on an 11-4 run to capture a 16-15 lead with 11:32 left in the first half.
  • After a layup by Anthony Simo later tied the game at 19-19, the Pioneers embarked on a 9-0 run that saw the Saints fall behind 28-19 with 5:49 remaining in the half. 
  • The Saints  answered with a 6-0 run off a three-pointer from Pablo Navarro, a layup by Diego Trejo-Delgado, and a free-throw by Diego Trejo-Delgado. SMU trimmed the deficit to 28-25 with 4:28 left in the first half.
  • The Pioneers out scored the Saints 7-3 in the final four minutes, as the Saints went into halftime trailing 35-28.

Second Half

  • Saint Martin's saw its second half field goal percentage rise to 45.5%, but a 23-12 rebounding advantage for the Pioneers played a key role in the second frame shifting toward Cal State East Bay.
  • A Kaden Hansen three-pointer right out of the gates cut the deficit to 35-31, but the Pioneers extended the lead to 44-34 with 14:31 remaining in regulation.
  • With 9:51 remaining in the second half, a layup by Ronyo Obou cut Cal State East Bay's lead to 50-45. The Saints got within four points at the nine minute mark with a Kaden Hansen three, but the Pioneers pushed back ahead by double figures at the 5:54 mark (61-51).
  • The Saints saw the lead trimmed down to seven points with just under five minutes remaining, but the Pioneers closed out the game on a 12-4 run, closing out a 73-58 defeat for the Saints.

Top Performers

  • Kaden Hansen led the Saints with 21 points, shooting 7-11 from the field and 4-4 from three-point range. Hansen also added three steals, three rebounds, and two assists.
  • Diego Trejo-Delgado scored 19 points and added a team-high nine rebounds. He shot 7-8 from the free-throw line.
