Softball Wins Four out of Five Games at Tournament of Champions

SMU Softball competed in the Tournament of Champions from Friday, February 14th through Sunday, February 16th.

TURLOCK, CA — Saint Martin's Softball (6-4) went down to California to play in the Tournament of Champions in their second invitational of the 2025 season.

The Saints opened the tournament with a thrilling game against Dominican University. In a closely contested battle, Saint Martin's emerged victorious with a 6-5 win, setting a positive tone for the weekend. Standouts for the opening game were Hayley Agena with 3 RBIs and Ashley Goodale, who would score two runs. The second game would be a back-and-forth affair, with both teams capitalizing on each other's errors and making key plays. Saint Martin's managed to tie the game in later innings, forcing the matchup into extra frames. In the top of the 10th, the Saints' offense would come alive, scoring three crucial runs to secure the victory. Heather Ebner played a pivotal role, delivering a clutch RBI double that brought in the go-ahead run. Shelby Lawson also added 2 RBIs to continue an impressive offensive streak to start the season.

The momentum continued as the Saints took on Vanguard University. Despite falling behind early, Saint Martin's rallied in the final inning to secure a thrilling victory. A key hit from Goodale and a walkoff RBI from Ebner would secure a 2-1 win. Pitchers Amanda Peterson, Keagan Norfleet, and Chloe Leverington would all operate well under pressure, preventing Vanguard from scoring any late-inning runs to put the game out of reach. Later that day, the Saints faced off against Sonoma State University. Saint Martin's would battle, but would be cut off through five innings as Sonoma State would get up to 10 runs by the fifth frame. An SSU error would give the Saints the only run of the contest, with the final score being 10-1.

Saint Martin's University Softball closed out the Tournament of Champions with a thrilling 8-7 walk-off win over Cal Poly Humboldt on Sunday. The game saw multiple lead changes, with Ebner smashing a solo home run in the sixth to tie it at 6-6. Cal Poly Humboldt briefly reclaimed the lead in the seventh, but the Saints responded in the bottom half, capitalizing on a defensive miscue to bring in the tying and winning runs. Leverington earned the win on the mound for SMU.
