LACEY, WA — The Saint Martin's Men's basketball team (19-12, 8-10 GNAC) closed out their season with two challenging matchups, hosting the University of Alaska Fairbanks on February 27th and the University of Alaska Anchorage on March 1st.
On Thursday, the Saints squared off against the UAF Nanooks in an electrifying quadruple overtime battle. The Saints would start the first half strong with multiple players contributing to the offense. After extending the lead to six, the Nanooks found their offensive rhythm and earned a 10-point lead over the Saints going into halftime. Coming out of the break, the Saints were looking for ways to score and limit the Nanooks' offense. As the half progressed, the Saints slowly chipped away at the lead. By the last minute, the Saints were down four, and a gritty offensive push led by Diego Trejo-Delgaldo would send the game into its first overtime. Trejo-Delgado was one of the main contributors to the Saints offensively and defensively. He would end the night with 31 points and 14 rebounds.
Marcel Stevens also would have a stellar night, ending the game with 31 points and eight rebounds. The first three overtime periods would be extremely competitive with teams going shot-for-shot. Only in the fourth overtime would the Nanooks pull away and earn a lead great enough to hold until the end of the game. The exhilarating contest would end with UAF prevailing 123-115.
The Saints hosted the UAA Seawolves for their Senior Day and Homecoming game just days later. Hoping to rebound from their previous loss, Saint Martin's faced the Seawolves for the last night of regular season GNAC play. The Saints struggled to find their rhythm offensively, facing a strong defensive effort from UAA. The Seawolves would dominate offensively throughout the first half and extend the lead to 22 entering half time. Coming out of the locker room, the Seawolves would continue to snuff out the Saints offensive efforts, with SMU only scoring 22 points in the second half. Trejo-Delgado led the Saints' offense for the second straight game, ending the night with 24 points. The Saints' defense held UAA to 21 points in the second half but could not overcome the deficit from earlier in the game. The Saints would close out their season with a 69-48 loss to the Seawolves.
Jaden Nielsen-Skinner, Myles Samuels, Marcel Stevens, Gavin Gilstrap, and Jayshawn Moore were honored on Saturday's Senior Day, and we thank them for their efforts and congratulate them on their historic basketball careers. Nielsen-Skinner ends his time as a Saint as the program's all-time assist leader, surpassing 600 over the weekend.
