Softball Falls to SFSU in Opening Round of West Regional Tournament

SMU Softball was defeated by No. 22 San Francisco State in the NCAA West Regional on Thursday, May 8th, 5-3.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Saint Martin's Softball (32-15) faced the 22nd-ranked San Francisco State Gators in the opening contest of the 2025 Softball West Regional Tournament.

The Saints would jump out to a 1-0 lead to begin the game thanks to the top of the order getting on base, with Shelby Lawson squeaking a ground ball by on the third-base line to bring home Ashley Goodale. Lawson led the offensive effort for the Saints, going 3-4 at the plate and bringing home the sole RBI. The SFSU Gators would strike back immediately in the bottom of the frame, however, taking a quick 2-1 lead. SMU's offense would slow down while SFSU's would keep rolling, with the Gators expanding their lead to 5-1 through three innings. The score would remain for two more innings, but SMU would continue to fight late into the game.

Saint Martin's would find a much-needed offensive surge in the sixth inning thanks to well-placed hitting from Kekai Schultz and Elissa Dewees, cutting SFSU's lead to just two runs. Amanda Peterson would hold things down on the mound after relieving starter Bridget Johnson, contributing on both the mound and the plate, giving up zero earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched to help keep the Saints in the contest defensively. Even with the momentum in SMU's favor late, the Saints would not be able to get the runs they needed to extend the game, and they would fall to the West Region's second seed, 5-3.

The Saints will face the loser of Cal State San Marcos and Biola tomorrow, Friday, May 9th, at 1:30 PM. Stream, stats, and other information can be found here.
