MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Saint Martin's Volleyball team was victorious in fours sets on the road against Western Oregon in the team's GNAC opener Thursday, September 18.
After losing the first set and falling behind early in the second, Saint Martin's rallied back to take the next three sets. The win improved SMU's record on the year to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in GNAC play — the Saints have won six straight matches.
How It Happened
- After SMU went up 3-0 to start the match, Western Oregon responded with a 7-1 run. While Saint Martin's managed to tie the game at 15-15, the Wolves pulled away late down the stretch and closed the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-20.
- A big run early on in the second frame put Western Oregon up 13-7, and the Wolves held the lead through an 18-13 start to the set. Saint Martin's responded with a 5-1 run to claw back into contention, and pulled away winning the final three points to win the set 25-23.
- The Saints wasted no time taking control of the third set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. SMU held off any comeback attempts and never let Western Oregon get any closer than within three points throughout the remainder of the set, winning 25-18. The Saints hit .400% in the set.
- The fourth set started off close, with Western Oregon holding a narrow lead early on. The Saints embarked on an 8-2 run midway through, putting SMU up 12-8. The Wolves went on a 6-1 run that put Saint Martin's down 14-13, setting the stage for a back-and-forth finish to the set. With the set eventually knotted at 23-23, SMU rallied to win 26-24 behind three straight points to close out the match.
