Saints find rhythm beyond the arc in victory over Yellowjackets

LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team was victorious 63-57 against Montana State Billings at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, January 10.

The Saints were scorching from beyond the arc, while playing stout defense against the Yellowjackets to notch a hard-fought GNAC victory. The win improved the Saints' record to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in GNAC.

How It Happened
First Quarter

  • Both teams started slow offensively, as the Saints built a narrow 5-3 lead at the five-minute mark.
  • The Saints pulled ahead by five points down the stretch, before the Yellowjackets pushed back to one possession in the final minute — a last-second layup by Karyss Lacanlale put Saint Martin's ahead 15-11 at the end of the frame.
  • The Saints struggled shooting from the field overall in the first frame, but went 3-6 from three-point range.

Second Quarter

  • Like the first quarter, a flurry of three-pointers (3-5, 60%) in the second quarter provided a spark for the Saints.
  • A 5-0 run to start the quarter put Saint Martin's up 20-11, before a three-pointer by Laiken Hill at the 6:22 mark later put the Saints up 23-12.
  • A 13-3 run by the Yellowjackets trimmed the Saints' lead to 26-25 with 1:29 on the clock. After an exchange of Saints free-throws and a MSUB jumper, Saint Martin's went into halftime leading 28-27.

Third Quarter

  • The opening minutes of the third quarter helped swing the game in favor of Saint Martin's, as the Saints opened the frame with an 8-0 run to go up 36-27 at the 7:11 mark — Laiken Hill and Jada Travis hit three-pointers during the run.
  • After the Saints went up 41-28 at the 5:39 mark, the Yellowjackets closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to trim the Saint Martin's lead to 43-37 heading into the final frame.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Saints once again started off the quarter with a strong run, riding a 6-2 stretch to go up 49-39 with 8:45 on the clock.
  • The Yellowjackets pulled within six points midway through the fourth, before the Saints went back up 58-47 with 1:26 on the clock behind a Jada Travis and-one that brought her point total to 20.
  • Montana State Billings made a late push and came as close as 60-55, but the Saints held on down the stretch and walked off with a 63-57 victory.

  • Jada Travis led all scorers with 20 points, her fourth 20-point performance of the season.
  • Kiana Rios totaled 13 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.
  • Laiken Hill tallied 13 points, three rebounds, and one assist.
  • Avery Oaster finished with 13 eight points and six rebounds.

Team Stat of the Game
The Saints shot 9-19 (47.4%) from three-point range, their best three-point shooting percentage in a game this season.
