LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team was victorious 89-76 against Western Washington at Marcus Pavilion on Thursday, January 15.
The Saints held off a late rally from the Vikings, riding the momentum of a stellar 37-point performance from Kaden Hansen, a new career high.
The win improved the Saints' record to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in GNAC play. The victory is the 11th straight for Saint Martin's, tying a program record for longest winning streak.
How It Happened
First Half
- The Saints opened the game on a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Dae'Kwon Watson.
- Saint Martin's built a nine-point lead midway through, and held a 20-13 lead at the 10-minute mark.
- After Western Washington trimmed the lead to 20-16, the Saints embarked on a massive 18-0 run that pushed the Saint Martin's lead to 38-16 with 4:26 left in the first half. The run saw three-pointers from Kaden Hanson and Ronyo Obou.
- The Saints went into halftime leading 45-29 behind 19 points from Kaden Hansen. The Saints limited Western Washington to 27% shooting from the field, while finishing the first 20 minutes 47.4%. Saint Martin's held a sizable 30-19 advantage in team rebounding.
Second Half
- With 17:18 on the clock, a layup by Patrick Kilfoil put the Saints up by 20 (54-34).
- A layup by Kaden Hansen at the 12:56 mark put the Saints ahead 61-43 and pushed Hansen's point total to 25.
- The Vikings made a huge second-half push, slowly trimming the Saints' lead down to single digits, and then as low as four points (72-68) with 5:10 to go.
- The Saints responded with a run of their own, as Patrick Kilfoil hit a jumper, and both Patrick Kilfoil and Pablo Navarro went 2-2 at the free-throw line to put Saint Martin's back ahead 78-68 with 2:23 on the clock. A three-pointer by Kilfoil capped off a 9-0 run that put the Saints up 81-68, helping tilt the game in favor of Saint Martin's.
