Late comeback attempt falls short for Saints Men’s Basketball

LACEY, Wash. — Despite a valiant late comeback attempt by the Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team, the Saints fell by a score of 76-72 to Seattle Pacific at Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, January 31.

After trailing by 13 points with just over four minutes remaining in the game, the Saints saw two late shot attempts with chances to both tie and take the lead, but were unable to complete the late comeback. The loss dropped the Saints' record to 17-4 overall and 9-2 in GNAC play.

How It Happened
First Half

  • The Saints shot 44.4% from the field in the first half, but struggled from three and saw the Falcons go 57.14% from the field and hit seven three-pointers.
  • After a 4-4 tie to start the game, Seattle Pacific took a steady lead that held throughout the first half. By the 10 minute mark, the Saints fell behind 24-18.
  • The Saints never trailed by double figures in the first half, and pulled within 36-31 at the 53-second mark with a three-pointer by Patrick Kilfoil
  • Seattle Pacific hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining, as Saint Martin's went into halftime trailing 39-31.

Second Half

  • The Falcons continued to shoot well from beyond the arc in the second half, hitting seven more three-pointers.
  • After Diego Trejo-Delgado scored the opening points of the first half for Saint Martin's, Seattle Pacific responded with a 7-0 run that saw the Saints fall behind 46-33 with 17:31 on the clock.
  • With 14:22 on the clock, a Kaden Hansen layup capped off a 7-0 Saint Martin's run that trimmed the deficit to 46-40.
  • Seattle Pacific pulled ahead by upwards of 13 points, leading 71-58 with 4:39 remaining in the game.
  • The Saints emphatically stormed back, as the home crowd rose to its feet for a late comeback attempt.
  • A trio of Kaden Hansen free-throws sparked a run, before Pablo Navarro hits a jumper and later hit two free-throws to cut the SPU lead to 71-65.
  • With 55 seconds remaining, a layup by Kaden Hansen moved the score to 72-69 Falcons.
  • After two successful Seattle Pacific free-throws on the following possession, a Kaden Hansen three-pointer brought the game to 74-72 and brought an eruption from the crowd.
  • The Saints forced a missed layup with 27 seconds remaining, creating a chance to tie or take the lead on the offensive possession. Saint Martin's saw a jump shot, offensive rebound, and missed three-pointer with time running out, as Seattle Pacific grabbed the rebound and made the ensuing two free-throws to win the game 76-72.

  • Kaden Hansen led the Saints with 29 points, shooting 11-21 from the field. He added three assists and two steals.
  • Anthony Simo totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two steals.
  • Diego Trejo-Delgado tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and steals.
