Softball picks up two wins at Stan State Invitational

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Softball team went 2-3 at the Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, California, which took place on Feb. 13-15.

The Saints took eight-run victories twice over Menlo College, while dropping narrow one-run defeats to the other three opponents, including fifth-ranked Cal State East Bay. The tournament moved the Saints' record to 6-4 overall.

Game 1: Saint Martin's 8, Menlo College 0

  • Bridget Johnson pitched a gem for the Saints, throwing a six-inning shutout that saw her strike out three batters and allow only four hits and no walks. She earned the win and improved to 2-1 on the season.
  • Kaylee Walker got the scoring started with an RBI double in the bottom of the second, before doubling the lead to 2-0 with another RBI double in the fourth. 
  • A big sixth inning helped seal the deal for the Saints, as Saint Martin's added four more runs off an RBI double from Kaylee Walker, an RBI single from Shelby Lawson, and a two-RBI home run by Taylor Orgeles.

Game 2: Saint Martin's 1, Dominican 2

  • The second game of the tournament was a low-scoring battle, as the Saints out-hit the Penguins 7-5, but were limited to just one run in a 2-1 loss.
  • Through the first two innings, Dominican was held scoreless and the Saints tallied a first-inning double.
  • Dominican broke the scoring in the top of the third, with a leadoff solo home run. The Saints tallied a two-out double in the bottom of the inning, but could not score the runner.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Layla Royle hit an RBI single to score Jules Detrinidad and knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Penguins responded in the ensuing inning, hitting a one-out, solo home run to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Saints tallied two hits in the bottom of the sixth and a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to cut into the deficit and fell by a final score of 2-1.

Game 3: Saint Martin's 1, #5 Cal State East Bay 2

  • Facing a top-five opponent, the Saints suffered another close 2-1 loss to start off day two of the tournament.
  • The first three innings were scoreless, but the Saints saw three runners on base off two hit batters and one base hit. In the bottom of the third Cal State East Bay moved runners to second and third with one out, but Kayla Vaughan pitched out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the top of the fourth, a leadoff single put Taylor Orgeles on first base, before a fielder's choice and error allowed Orgeles to score on the following at-bat, putting Saint Martin's up 1-0.
  • The Pioneers knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, doing so off an RBI double with one out. The Saints loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score.
  • The game remained tied at 1-1, until an RBI single with two outs by Cal State East Bay in the bottom of the sixth put Saint Martin's behind 2-1.
  • The Saints tallied a walk and single with two outs in the final inning, but were unable to score and ultimately fell by a final score of 2-1.

Top Performers

  • Taylor Orgeles went 1-3 and drew one walk.
  • Kayla Vaughan pitched 3.1 innings and struck out two batters, allowing one run off three hits.

Game 4: Saint Martin's 11, Menlo College 3

  • The Saints got things started well, scoring two runs in the first inning off an RBI single and fielder's choice. The Saints followed up in the top of the second with three more runs, as Saint Martin's saw a walk with bases loaded and two-RBI double by Taylor Orgeles.
  • Menlo College scored one run in the third and later two runs in the fourth, but the Saints added an RBI single in the fourth and five additional runs across the sixth and seventh innings, walking away with an 11-3 victory.

Top Performers

  • Bridget Johnson earned her second win of the tournament, throwing four innings and striking out four batters. She allowed three runs off five hits.
  • Heidi Leitz pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four batters and allowing no runs and just one hit.
  • Haley Agena went 3-5 with three runs.
  • Shelby Lawson went 3-3 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Kaylee Walker went 1-3 with one RBI and two runs.

Game 5: Saint Martin's 4, Stanislaus State 5 

  • The Saints started off strong, scoring two runs in the top of the first off a two-RBI single by Amanda Peterson.
  • The Saints kept the Warriors scoreless for the first three innings, as Saint Martin's extended its lead to 3-0 with an RBI single from Shelby Lawson in the top of the third.
  • Stanislaus State scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth off a sacrifice fly, but the Saints bounced right back with another Shelby Lawson RBI single in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
  • The Warriors made a late push, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, walking with the bases loaded and scoring two runs off a single to right field.
  • With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Stanislaus State hit a walkoff RBI single to right field, securing a 5-4 final score in favor of the home team.
