LACEY, Wash. — The Saint Martin's Women's Basketball team notched another victory on Thursday night, defeating Northwest Nazarene 73-53 at Marcus Pavilion.
The Saints shot an efficient 45.2% from the field and were led by a prolific performance from Avery Oaster, who tallied career-bests in both points (30) and rebounds (16) — her 15 made field goals is a new program record, and ranks sixth-best in the GNAC record book. The win improved the Saints' record to 16-8 overall and 12-3 in GNAC play.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Saints attacked the opening stages of the game with intensity, going 3-4 and building up a 6-0 lead out of the gates.
- At the 5:48 mark, Jada Travis hit her second three-pointer of the first quarter to put the Saints up 12-4.
- The Saints shot 43.8% and limited the Nighthawks to 16.7%, continuing to build the team's lead in the first quarter. Saint Martin's ended the first frame leading 21-10.
Second Quarter
- The Nighthawks started off the quarter on a 6-1 run, before the Saints scored their first field goal of the period off a jumper by Avery Oaster at the 6:28 mark to make it 24-14, Saints.
- At the 4:48 mark, Karyss Lacanlale made a cross-court pass to Kasey Booster who converted a corner three-pointer, putting the Saints up 29-16. After a defensive hold, Avery Oaster scored in the paint to put Saint Martin's ahead 31-16 at the 4:18 mark, prompting a Northwest Nazarene timeout.
- The teams exchanged buckets down the stretch of the second quarter, as an 11-6 rebounding advantage in the quarter helped the Saints take a 38-25 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
- Just like the first half, the Saints opened the second half on a scoring streak, going on a 7-0 run to build a 45-25 lead at the 7:41 mark. Kiana Rios scored two buckets during the run, and Jada Travis converted a three-pointer.
- The Saints shot 55.6% in the third quarter and out-scored the Nighthawks 22-14, building up a 60-39 lead through the third quarter, which was capped off by a buzzer-beating layup by Avery Oaster.
Fourth Quarter
- Both teams exchanged baskets early in the fourth, as a layup by Avery Oaster pushed the Saints' lead to 66-41 with 7:57 left in regulation.
- Back-to-back three-pointers by the Nighthawks evolved into a 12-3 run that trimmed the Saints' lead to 69-52 with 3:20 to go. Out of the timeout, Avery Oaster converted a jumper to put the Saints back ahead 71-53.
- The Saints made key stops down the stretch, holding on to win comfortably by a margin of 73-53, securing the team's sixth consecutive victory.
