HAYWARD, Calif. — The Saint Martin's Men's Basketball team saw its historic season come to an end, falling in the NCAA West Region Second Round against Point Loma by a final score of 66-57.
The Saints erased a 15-point first-half deficit to pull back within one possession in the second half, but ultimately saw the comeback effort fall short as Point Loma prevailed.
The Saints tallied 26 wins this season, tying a program record for most Division II victories in a season.
How It Happened
First Half
- Pablo Navarro and Anthony Simo hit the opening baskets for the Saints in the post, but Point Loma scored its first nine points off three-pointers and built a 9-4 lead out of the gates.
- A leaning jumper by Diego Trejo-Delgado at the 15:52 mark trimmed Point Loma's lead to 11-6.
- Pablo Navarro and Diego Trejo-Delgado earned their way to the free-throw line for a total of three points, cutting the deficit to 15-12 with 12:21 left in the first half.
- The Saints were held scoreless for over four minutes, as the Sea Lions went on a 10-0 run to pull ahead 25-12 with 8:44 remaining in the first half. Mark Clegg Jr. snapped the run with a turnaround shot in the paint.
- Saint Martin's trailed by upwards of 15 points in the first half, and went into the break trailing 38-25 after Point Loma scored a last-second layup at the buzzer.
Second Half
- The Saints opened the second half with back-to-back inside baskets from Anthony Simo and Pablo Navarro to cut the deficit to single digits (38-29) with 17:43 on the clock.
- A layup by Dae'Kwon Watson off a Mark Clegg Jr. assist at the 14:50 mark pulled the Saints within 39-33.
- At the 13:35 mark, Dae'Kwon Watson stole the ball and converted a fastbreak layup to bring the Saints within 39-35.
- A corner three-pointer from Pablo Navarro at the 8:48 mark pulled Saint Martin's within 47-42.
- Diego Trejo-Delgado scored a fastbreak layup after a stop on the ensuing possession, pushing the score to 47-44 Sea Lions.
- With five minutes to go, the Saints trailed by a narrow 50-47 margin.
- After a flagrant foul called against Saint Martin's, the Saints fell behind 54-47.
- With 3:51 to go, Point Loma's Andrew Nagy converted a pivotal and-one to extend the Point Loma lead to 57-47.
- The Saints were held scoreless during a three-minute drought in which the Sea Lions went on an 11-0 run.
- Saint Martin's pushed the deficit back to 10 points, as Pablo Navarro hit back-to-back layups to bring the score to 61-51 with just over two minutes to go.
- Saint Martin's saw a pair of free-throws and jumper by Kaden Hansen to come within 62-55 with 59 seconds remaining.
- The Saints were unable to make up any further ground, falling 66-57 at the final whistle to mark the conclusion of the team's postseason run.
