Johnson begins his first season with Saint Martin’s University in 2015-16.
“I feel very blessed to have this opportunity at Saint Martin's and I am really excited to work and learn for Coach Pribble,” said Johnson. “I cannot wait to get to work helping put a team on the floor that the University and community will be very proud of.”
Johnson comes to SMU after spending last season as the head boys’ basketball coach at Centennial High School in Franklin, Tennessee. Johnson is no stranger to Washington as he was a success high school coach at Lake Washington, Auburn Riverside and Auburn Mountainview High School coaching either the men’s or women’s program.
He began his coaching career in 1999 as he worked for the men’s basketball program at the University of Washington. While working with the Huskies, he helped with film exchange, organized recruiting materials and helped with on-floor practice.
He got his foot into the door as an assistant coach at Pierce College and the next season was the head JV coach at Prairie High School. Johnson’s first head coaching job was as the boys’ basketball coach at Lake Washington High School from 2003-09. While in Kirkland, Wash., Johnson led his team to two Kingco Division Championships and four league/district playoff appearances. He finished his career there with a 60-70 record and left to take the girls’ basketball coaching job at Auburn Riverside High School.
Johnson led the Ravens to a 69-11 record for three seasons and guided the girls to two South Puget Sound League North 4A titles and a West Central Division III 4A Championship. He led the 2009 team to an undefeated 29-0 record and was selected as the SPSL 4A Coach of the Year.
He stepped down as the girls coach and took the boys’ basketball job at Auburn Mountainview High School, where he led his team to the 2012-13 league championship and made the district quarterfinals in 2013-14. He finished his tenure with a 23-25 record before moving to Tennessee.
Johnson graduated with his associate’s degree in 1998 from Bellevue College, his Bachelor of Arts in 2001 from University of Washington and Master or Art in teaching in 2003 from Lewis & Clark College.
Johnson resides in Bonney Lake, Wash., with his wife Kami, daughter Kaidyn (5), and son Logan (2).
"Terry has strong ties to the local basketball community, and he is a proven winner at various different levels,” said head coach Alex Pribble. “He has a passion for coaching, and he will be a great addition to our coaching staff this season."
