Saints Win First Match Under Head Coach Heather Cato Behind Koehler's Shutout –
Ali Koehler recorded a new season-high 13 saves against Concordia University on Thursday as the Saints fell 4-0 to end their four-game home stand. Concordia took the early lead in the 13th minutes when Kyra Radcliffe dribbled past the Saints' defense on a throw in and scored her third goal of the season on a shot bending left to right. The Cavaliers extended their lead in the 26th minute when a goal kick from Concordia, found a streaking Quinn Williams, who managed to slip past the Saints' defense for a one-on-one attack against Saints' keeper Koehler. The Saints and the Cavaliers remained scoreless in the final 20 minutes of the half to enter the midway point at Concordia leading 2-0. 3:03 into the second half, the Cavaliers added to their lead when Kasey Amas scored her first goal the season off of the corner kick. Megan Myers and Ewing Gabrielle were credited with the assist on the goal. The final blow came in the 90th minute when leading goal scorer Van Steenberge capitalized on a Saints' error and scored her fourth goal of the season to wrap the match up at 4-0 in favor of Concordia. The Saints recorded four shots in the match, with
Amber Burbridge leading the team with two shots and one shot on goal.
Rose Robbins recorded the second shot on goal while
Lauren Allison attempted the fourth and final shot in the box score.
Ali Koehler got the start at goalkeeper, and despite facing 29 shots, Koehler managed to save a season-high 13 saves in 90 minutes with four goals allowed.
A goal in the 27th minute from
Tiare Kahalewai and the finishing blow by
Lauren Allison, along with
Ali Koehler's shutout, earned Saint Martin's its' first win of the season over Montana State Billings 2-0. The Saints fought off four Montana State Billings shots and one corner in the first 24 minutes before the SMU broke the pressure and responded with a goal from Kahalewai. Kahalewai's first collegiate goal came from the left side of the box, over the keeper, tucking inside the far post to give SMU a 1-0 lead.
Ali Koehler and the defense deflected two more corners and three shots from the Yellowjackets to close out the first half with the lead intact. Montana State Billings continued to attack the Saints' defense in the second half, firing off three shots and a corner before the Saints' first shot of the half came from Allison in the 68th minute.
Gloria Petri attempted to put the Saints up by two in the 73rd minute when her shot sailed wide from the right-side wing. The Saints punched open the lead in the 75th minute when
Jessica Moskowitz, from the top of the box, found Allison on the far post for her third goal of the season and the 2-0 lead. MSUB challenged the Saints in the final minutes with six shots, three blocked and three saved by Koehler, but never found the back of the net as the Saints clinched the 2-0 shutout victory on the road. "Today we put things together and got the result," said head coach
Heather Cato. "We had a little bit of everything today. From a goal line clearance, to amazing saves, and beautiful finishes. It was a gritty team performance with sprinkles of individual effort that produced the win today. We are proud of this team and the character they continue to show throughout each game." Allison took two shots in the match with one finding the back of the net. Kahalewai's lone shot produced a goal and Petri recorded the fourth and final shot in the box score. Koehler got the start at keeper and earned her first clean sheet of the season with six saves on 16 shots faced.
Western Washington Preview – With anyone yet to spoil the Vikings' perfect season, the third-ranked Western Washington enters the match with a 10-0-0 record and 6-0-0 in conference. The Saints and the Vikings met in Lacey last month, ending with the Vikings walking away with a 6-1 victory. Gabriela Pelogi continues to dominate the conference with 10 goals, four assists for 24 points. Pelogi has been effective with her shots, taking 54 total shots and reaching goal on 25 for a .463 shot on goal percentage. Karli White and Liv Larson have combined for 11 goals and 10 assists for a total of 32 points. At goalkeeper, Ashley Homer has been near perfect, in 825 minutes of action, only two goals have been scored (0.22 goals allowed average) while making 13 saves for save percentage of .867. The Vikings will look to attack early against the Saints, after outscoring their opponents 22-1 in first half goals. Western Washington has outshot their opponents 249 to 46 and have taken more corners (68-16).
Seattle Pacific Preview – The Falcons travel to Lacey after hosting Central Washington on Thursday. Seattle Pacific enters the week on a two-game skid and losers of four of the last five. Leading the Falcons' offense is Kasey Reeve, with six goals, and one assist on 26 shots for 13 points. Julia DeVere is another SPU player to watch with her four goals and one assist. Sophia Chilczuk, Mickayla Mury and Simone Herzberg each have netted two goals on the year and have combined for three assists. Anchoring the Falcons' defense is goalkeeper Molly Stinson. Stinson, in 966 minutes has allowed 13 goals for a 1.22 goals allowed average while making 48 saves for a .787 save percentage. Stinson has been credited with one shutout. Seattle Pacific has struggled in the early goings, allowing eight goals to their four; however, have responded strong in the second half, outscoring their opponents 11 to 4. The Falcons have an edge in saves (48-41) over their opponents and have been outshot (138-135) and corners (48-41).
GNAC Review – Western Washington continues their perfect season by improving to 6-0-0 in conference and 10-0-0 on the year. Concordia, in second, has yet to lose in the GNAC with a 5-0-1 record in conference and 8-2-1 overall, while on a five-game winning streak. Northwest Nazarene, Seattle Pacific, and Simon Fraser round out the top five with 15, 12, and 9 points respectively. Western Oregon and Saint Martin's are locked in at sixth with four points in six matches while Montana State Billings places eighth with four points in seven matches. Central Washington rounds out the standings with two points.
