CALDWELL, Idaho – A clutch hit from
Kahi Hirano and two home runs from
Adam Eskil propelled the Saints to their first victory of the 2017 season, 10-8, over College of Idaho at Wolfe Field.
With the game tied 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning, Hirano beat out the throw from second base and drove in Zack Raczok to break the tie. Eskil, who already homered in the sixth inning, drove a ball to deep center field and gave Saint Martin's (1-3) the eventual 10-8 win over the Coyotes (5-8).
SMU took the first lead of the game in the second inning after
Micah McNicoll walked and stole second with one out.
Shaan Kothari singled to left to put runners on the corners before Raczok's base hit scored the first run of the game.
The Yotes captured the lead in the third inning on a base loaded walk, RBI groundout and throwing error resulted in three runs and a 3-1 lead.
The Saints answered back the next half inning, capitalizing on errors by College of Idaho. Raczok walked in a run before a balk and a wild pitch plated two more runners.
Steven Sordahl ended the four run inning on a RBI ground out to second, scoring Raczok.
College of Idaho responded quickly in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs of their own, highlighted by back-to-back two RBI singles, to regain the 7-5 lead.
Once again, SMU rallied in the top of the sixth, cutting the Yotes' lead to 7-6 on a double-play ball that drove in Hirano. With two outs, and the tying run on second, Eskil launched a ball over the right-center wall, his first home run of the season, to give the Saints an 8-7 edge.
The Yotes battled back one more time, tying the game in the bottom half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring the runner from third.
Raczok's double in the seventh and advancement on a wild pitch set the table for Hirano who reached on an infield hit to the second baseman. SMU added one insurance run in the eighth inning on Eskil's second homer of the day, and the Saints held on for the 10-8 victory.
Jacob Phipps got the start on the mound, going 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits while striking out two.
Benjamin Wadowski (1-0) picked up the victory after throwing 3.2 innings in relief, gave up one unearned run and struck out six batters.
Zach Stevenson picked up the two inning save, his first of the season, after allowing no hits and punched out two Yotes.
Sordahl led all hitters with three hits, along with one run and a RBI. Eskil finished the game 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. McNicoll and Raczok each added two hits and combined for four runs, three walks and two RBIs.
Up Next: The Saints remain in Caldwell for the next three days, playing one game Friday against Yotes before a double-header on Saturday and finishing with a game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
