Saints Split Doubleheader Against Yotes In Cold Weather

CALDWELL, Idaho – Saint Martin's Baseball spilt the double-header against The College of Idaho, dropping the first game 3-2 in extra innings before outlasting the Yotes 3-2 in the second game.

Game One

Neither team's bats got hot until the bottom of the sixth inning when a sacrifice fly drove in the first run of the game for College of Idaho. The Yotes (7-8) scored, what proved to be a critical run, in the bottom of eighth on a RBI single to third base.

SMU (1-5) trailing 2-0, entering the top of the ninth, got a runner on-base in Steven Sordahl who reached on a throwing error and advanced to second. Next batter, Austin Feist singled to center, advancing Sordahl to third. Feist brought home the first run for the Saints after stealing second, and throw got past the infield, allowing Sordahl to score. Micah McNicoll drove in the tying run later in the inning after a sacrifice bunt brought home Feist.

However, the next frame, the Yotes scored the walk-off run on a double to right center that hit off the glove of Feist as Saint Martin's fell 3-2.

Ryan Dorney picked up the start for SMU, going 6.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out five Yotes. Luke Hare (0-1) picked up the loss after pitching the final 3.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits and struck out two.

The Saints combined for two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight times. Eskil and Alec Hagerman collected two hits each along with Feist and Sordahl's two hits combined.

Game Two

The Saints (2-5) quickly struck in the first inning after Eskil's sacrifice fly brought home Sordahl who reached on a single to left field. Next batter, Young singled to center field to drive in Feist and gave the Saints a 2-0 lead.

The Yotes (7-9) responded the latter half of the first with a single through the right side of the infield to cut the Saints lead to 2-1 after one.

Saint Martin's added what proved to be the winning run in the second inning after Shaan Kothari was hit by pitch and stole second. Jake Leonard, who got the start behind the plate, drove in Kothari on a single to left center.

College of Idaho once again answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a run scoring on a fielder's choice.
