KENNEWICK, Wash. - Saint Martin's University's Baseball's winning streak of three games came to a close after splitting a double-header with Central Washington University to open up the conference season.
Game One
The Saints (4-6, 1-1 GNAC) were locked in a pitching duel with the Wildcats (7-5, 1-1) until an extra inning sacrifice fly to right field from
Makana Aiona drove in the eventual game-winning run in the form of
Austin Feist.
Central struck first with a double down the left field line in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead after two.
Steven Sordahl responded the next half inning with a single to center field, driving in
Shaan Kothari from second base and knotting the game at 1-1.
Neither team managed to get any momentum until the eighth inning when SMU's Feist grounded to short, but the throw was muffed by the first baseman, allowing
Alec Hagerman to score the go-ahead run.
Only three outs away from the victory, clean-up hitter James Smith homered to right field on a 1-1 count to tie the game and send it into extras.
Feist opened up the 11th inning by being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on
Adam Eskil's double to left field. Aiona was called in off the bench and delievered for the Saints with a sac-fly to right, scoring Feist and extending the Saints' winning streak to three games.
Aaron Shoup got the start for Saint Martin's, going nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out eight Wildcats.
Luke Hare (1-1) picked up the victory after throwing 1.1 innings in relief and striking out one.
Zach Stevenson retired one batter in the 11th inning before
Adam Eskil earned his third save of the season by locking down the final two outs.
Game Two
A five run second inning was more than enough support for Mackenzie Gaul who pitched a complete game, 13 strikeout, shut-out gem as Central Washington won 10-0.
The Wildcats capitalized on two errors by the Saints' middle infield, that scored two runs, before a three-run home run highlighted the second inning.
CWU added two insurance runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and double to left center while tacking on their final three runs in the sixth with a RBI single to left and a two RBI single up the middle.
Gaul; however, only needed one run to complete the victory as he worked a complete game two hit shut-out. Gaul's perfect game attempt came to end in the fifth inning with a walk to Aiona, while the no-hitter was spoiled in the sixth by Sordahl's double to right field. 13 of Gaul's 21 outs came from strike outs.
Up Next: The Saints remain in Kennewick, Washington for another double-header against Central Washington with first pitch scheduled for noon.
