Walker Shuts Down Wildcats' Bats In Double-Header Split

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Saint Martin's Baseball split their second double-header against Central Washington in as many days behind a strong pitching performance by Mickey Walker.

Game One

The Saints (5-7, 2-2 GNAC) took an early lead in the first game off pass ball with the bases loaded for a 1-0 in the third. The Wildcats (8-6, 2-2) quickly responded with a run the bottom half of the third on a RBI double.

Central Washington broke open the game with a five run fifth inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles to right field. The Wildcats added another three runs in the seventh inning, two of which came from a triple to center field as CWU cruised to the 9-1 victory.

The Saints collected five hits over nine innings, two coming from the catcher Zach Raczok. Steven Sordahl, Austin Feist and Isaac Hegamin each tallied one hit each.

Tanner Inouye (1-1) received the loss after going 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with one walk and striking out one. Jacob Phipps came in for relief for the next 1.2 innings, and gave up four hits and three runs while Trevor Young finished the final two scoreless innings.

Game Two

The Wildcats struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off of the reigning Freshman of the Year, Walker.

Shaan Kothari, up 3-1 in the count, drove a ball deep to left field to get the Saints on the board with a solo-home run in the second inning.

Feist tied the game up at 2-2 in the third inning, after his sacrifice fly to center scored Hagerman, who reached on a lead-off walk. SMU took their first lead of the game in the next inning when Jake Leonard singled to center field, scoring both Kothari and Raczok.

With the Saints leading 4-2 after five, Sordahl gave SMU some needed insurance runs with a bases-clearing double to left center plated both Cameron Moiser and Hagerman. The Saints tacked on one more in the seventh, capitalizing on a Wildcats' throwing error, scoring pinch-hitter Micah McNicoll.

Central Washington made a comeback attempt in the final inning with a RBI single to left field and a RBI single to shortstop cut the Saints lead to 7-4. Adam Eskil closed out the game with a strike out, leaving two runners on-base.

Walker pitched six of the seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking one and struck out three Wildcats. Eskil finished the final inning, giving up two runs, one earned on three hits and two strikeouts.

SMU racked up 11 hits with Sordahl, Eskil and Kothari each recording multi-hit games. Hagerman, Leonard, McNicoll, Raczok and Kahi Hirano each collected one hit. Sordahl and Leonard also drove in two runs each.

Up Next: The Saints return home for their home-opener with two double-headers against GNAC opponent Montana State-Billings on March 11-12. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
